Gahanna Department of Parks and Recreation hosts Winter Activities
Popular summer youth camp leads to winter camp.
For the third year in a row the Gahanna Department of Parks and Recreation hosted its popular winter camp. Abbey Brooks, recreation supervisor, said the need for the winter camp came about through dialog exchanged with the summer camp participants.
The Gahanna Golf Course clubhouse is the location for winter camp and with transportation and facility size to consider the number of winter camp participants is limited to 26. "All spots were filled by the end of August, beginning of September." Brooks said.
Activities in the first week sessions included a trip to an indoor water park and movie. Week two saw a trip to COSI (a hands-on science center) and bowling. The mild weather also permitted some outdoor activities. On Dec. 31 a New Year’s Eve party was held with participants planning their food, decorations and games. "We actually take them to the store and give then a budget." Brooks said. "It was a lot of fun."
Winter camp provides a great opportunity to meet new families and kids as participants are drawn from a mix of children who participate in the summer programs, those who attend other parks and recreation activities and newcomers to the parks and recreation system.
